It is no easy feat to adjust to life after health when faced with permanent disability. It is something most of us take for granted – our health. To sit and obsess about what was and what we lost make coping with your situation impossible. You have to focus and remember that you are in control of your life and you can improve your outlook, sense of empowerment and independence.
Many wonder if it is possible to live a healthy, long and happy life when faced with tragedy such as disabilities and it can be overwhelming when you give in to fears and unsettling emotions. Questions like, will you find happiness again, keep or find a relationship, find a job, etc. are natural, but should not rule your life when you fill yourself with the positivity you deserve. You must realize you are not alone as worldwide individuals survive and thrive while living with a disability.
The biggest challenge would be acceptance as you might feel that you are giving up on your future and your life like throwing in the towel. Unfortunately it does not work that way and when refusing to accept and make peace with your circumstances will prevent you from finding new goals, make the needed changes and moving forward.
Your important step in moving on is not to suppress or ignore your own feelings and allow yourself the rollercoaster of emotions you are likely to go onto. It is normal and acceptable to go from disbelief to sadness to anger. People with a disability have the ability to build meaningful, happy lives and connecting with people with success stories will inspire and motivate you through difficult days. Without obsessing find out all you can about your disability and how it might help you to adjust quickly and easier.
